Following a head on collision on June 3, 2000, I spent nine months in a wheelchair due to a shattered femur and split knee. I was off the road, trying in vain to avoid a drunk driver, when he hit me.
Following surgery, and a crisis that had me in intensive care for a few days, I went home to learn how to do things from "my Harley" with a locked leg brace.
It is now March on 2001 and I have just begun putting weight on my injured leg -- strange sensation after nine months!! -- and have just started my physical therapy.
The therapist said there is a fine line between therapy and torture (and he is possibly quite right!) but I know that with some hard work I will again be walking unaided -- though probably always with a limp.
May of 2001: I have continued with physical therapy and am now walking with a cane. Can take a few steps without it but not too many, yet. I am increasing my strength and endurance. When I can walk unaided, I will go back to surgery to have the adhesions which keep me from bending or straightening my leg properly released. Then I will be able to walk more freely and bend my leg to walk downstairs properly. THE GAIN is worth the PAIN !!
